Canada MOU

EPA and Canada Sign Memorandum of Understanding

On September 14, 2005, Suzanne Rudzinski, EPA Director of Transportation and Regional Programs Division, and Anthony Taylor, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Director of Transportation and Energy Use Division, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at a freight facility near the Ambassador Bridge international border crossing in Michigan.  The MOU outlines a commitment by EPA and NRCan to work together to help the international freight industry cut emissions and save fuel.  Here are photographs of the three speakers with highlights of their presentations.

Suzanne Rudzinski--Director, EPA Transportation & Regional Programs Division

"By joining these complementary programs, the US and Canadian governments will help put the cleanest and most fuel efficient trucks on the road and put the most fuel efficient drivers in those trucks.  This combination will achieve the best fuel efficiency and best environmental results.

"As we all know, air pollution has no regard for geographic borders.  So it is imperative that we work together to improve the quality of our air.  The U.S. has a long history of working closely with our neighbors to the North to address air quality issues along the border.  Today's Memorandum of Understanding will add to this history by creating a more seamless international program to reduce fuel consumption and protect the environment."

Anthony (Tony) Taylor--NRCan Director, Transportation Energy Use Division

"The bottom line is that Canadian transportation companies and the Government of Canada are ready to open a door on a new partnership so that together we can continue to build vibrant freight industries in Canada and the United States.  And while we hope that you [the freight industry] will find our experiences useful and practical, we are equally hopeful that we will gain just as much from your expertise."

James (Jim) Van Zoeren--President and CEO of Alvan Motor Freight

"Alvan does a ton of cross-border business in and out of Canada.  It is the fastest growing segment of our product mix and we emphasize it with our customers all the time.  That's why we are so excited and pleased to be here today to witness this agreement.  By working closely together with our neighbors, we can share ideas, improve processes, and coordinate technology.  Working together, we can both reduce emissions and lower our costs.  That results in a couple of positives--saving money and improving the environment.  In my mind, that's a win-win deal."
