2005 Research Review

Graphic of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 2005 Research Review document cover.

The NREL Research Review is published annually to highlight some of the Laboratory's most recent accomplishments in the research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. This work is carried out to help secure, through science and technology, an energy future that is environmentally and economically sustainable.

The following documents are available as Adobe Acrobat PDFs. Download Adobe Reader.

Articles in the 2005 Research Review describe the progress being made in the research, development, and deployment of today's (and tomorrow's) biofuels and alternative vehicles; six attractive commercial buildings designed with energy efficiency in mind; and an innovative and promising design for a high-efficiency solar cell.

Feature Story

On the Road to Future Fuels and Vehicles (PDF 1.7 MB)

Alternative transportation fuels and vehicles can contribute much to reducing America's dependence on petroleum imports, as well as to the health of our environment. Find out how NREL will help the nation achieve these goals over the next few decades through R&D in cellulosic ethanol, biodiesel, and other advanced biofuels, as well as in plug-in hybrids, hydrogen-powered vehicles, fuel cells, and other future vehicle technologies.

High-Performing Commercial Buildings (PDF 1.7 KB)

NREL's R&D shows that it is possible to design and construct attractive buildings that are much more energy efficient than current standard practice, and just as comfortable, if not more so. Take a look at six "high-performing" commercial buildings, including the amount of energy they are saving annually.

Closing the Gaps (PDF 693 KB)

High-efficiency solar cell research at NREL has uncovered a multijunction solar cell with a design twist that can boost its expected efficiency; find out more about this somewhat unexpected but effective new design.

Perspective (PDF 131 KB)

Find out how NREL is helping to secure our future energy needs through science and technology that aligns with the goals of the President's Advanced Energy and Solar America initiatives; these include a strong focus on R&D in biofuels and advanced vehicles, energy-efficient buildings, and solar energy.

NREL in Focus (PDF 251 KB)

Meet NREL's new deputy director and chief operating officer; learn about a new partnership for fuel cell research and development; find out what a "teraflop" is and how NREL's computing capabilities have surpassed it; and get an early look at a brand new, energy-efficient NREL laboratory facility for scientific and technical research.

Awards & Honors (PDF 964 KB)

Read about two advances that garnered prestigious R&D100 Awards in 2005; meet some NREL researchers who have achieved national recognition recently in the areas of technology transfer and engineering; and find out which researcher was named to a Colorado commission on air quality.
