Congress Holds Hearings on the Administration's FY 2007 Budget Request and the Pace-Education Act

This week, the Education and Early Childhood Development Subcommittee of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee held a hearing on S. 2198, the Protecting America's Competitive Edge Through Education and Research Act (PACE-Education), and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Science, the Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce and Related Agencies held a hearing on the National Science Foundation's FY 2007 budget request.
On March 1, 2006, NSF Director Arden L. Bement, Jr., provided testimony on the state of mathematics, science and technology education in our elementary and secondary schools. Bement commented on the increasing internationalization of science and technology and on preparing an adequate high-technology workforce for the 21st century. On March 2, 2006, Bement provided testimony on the agency's $6.02 billion budget request to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Science, the Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce and Related Agencies. The Administration's request would increase NSF's budget by $439 million, or 7.9 percent, over FY 2006. The increase is part of the President's American Competitiveness Initiative, which includes a commitment to double NSF's budget over the next 10 years. At the hearing, Chairman Frank Wolf (R-VA) appealed to the research community to take every opportunity to maintain the momentum established by the President's American Competitiveness Initiative.
