House Appropriators Recommend 3 Percent Increase for NSF
May 24, 2005
On Tuesday, May 24, 2005, the House Appropriations Science, Departments of State, Justice, and Commerce and Related Agencies Subcommittee marked up its FY06 appropriations bill and provided NSF with $5.64 billion, or $171 million (3%) over the FY 2005 level. Total funding increases $38 million above the FY 2006 Budget Request.
The Research and Related Activities (R&RA) account is funded at $4.38 billion, $157 million (4%) and $47 million (1%) above the FY 2005 appropriated and FY 2006 request levels, respectively. The Education and Human Resources (EHR) account is funded at $807 million, $34 million (4%) below the current level and $70 million (9%) above the request level.
Although the increases to the R&RA and EHR accounts total $117 million, NSF's total budget only increases $38 million above the FY 2006 Budget Request. The resulting $79 million difference will most likely come from the Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction and Salaries and Expenses accounts. Information regarding the appropriation levels for the Major Research Equipment and Facilities Construction, Salaries and Expenses, National Science Board and Office of the Inspector General accounts is expected after the full Appropriations Committee marks up the bill.
