About Biological Infrastructure (DBI)

Empowering Biological Discovery

DBI supports activities that provide the infrastructure for contemporary research in biology. These include research resources and human resources. Programs encourage innovative approaches to enable modern biological research and to provide the breadth of human resources necessary to conduct this research.

Support for Research Resources includes informatics and databases, the curatorial improvement and computerization of research collections, living stock collections, development of new instrumentation, and improvement of research facilities at biological field stations and marine laboratories.

Support for Human Resources includes research experiences for undergraduates (sites), undergraduate research and mentoring in biology, undergraduate biology and math, research initiation grants/career advancement awards to broaden participation and, in selected disciplines, postdoctoral research fellowships.

In addition, the Plant Genome Research Program and the crosscutting activities supporting IGERT, GK-12, ADVANCE, and MRI through BIO are housed in DBI.
