International Polar Year — Additional Funding Opportunities at NSF
Besides the focused IPY solicitation anticipated for Fiscal Year 2007, additional IPY funding opportunities are available through other NSF programs supporting the International Polar Year.
Cooperating NSF programs presently include the
- Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO)
- Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)
- Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE)
- Office of Polar Programs (OPP)
- Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE)
Proposals submitted to a cooperating program must meet the goals and review criteria of that NSF program. They should also be consistent with the U.S. vision developed by the NAS/National Research Council (NRC) in A Vision for the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (http://www.us-ipy.org/).
Desirable characteristics and goals of IPY projects include those that
- advance polar science by launching new initiatives,
- are a pulse of activity during the IPY period or extend the legacy of IPY,
- encompass interdisciplinary scientific investigations,
- link arctic and antarctic research,
- include comprehensive data management plans,
- leave a legacy of data and/or infrastructure for polar observations, research, and education,
- develop and expand international partnerships and cooperation,
- engage the public in polar discovery, and
- attract and develop the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Proposals for IPY activities should focus on the polar regions. Where possible and appropriate, these proposals should develop and expand international partnerships and cooperation. Inclusion of researchers and educators who have not previously been involved in polar research is strongly encouraged.

DIRECTORATE FOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (BIO)

The Directorate for Geosciences will fund competitive proposals to conduct research relevant to IPY goals in any area normally supported by GEO with particular attention to those areas discussed on the GEO home page at http://www.nsf.gov/xxxx/. OFFICE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (OISE)
OISE encourages and will support IPY-related research activities through the following programs:

- Developing Global Scientists and Engineers (NSF 04-036)
- International Research Fellowship Program (IRFP) (NSF 06-582)
- East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) (NSF 06-602)
- Pan-American Advanced Studies Institutes Program (PASI) (NSF 03-506)
In addition to its own programs, OISE will continue to co-fund proposals submitted to NSF's disciplinary programs and will consider highly meritorious requests for international supplements to current NSF awards.
