Oliver Peebles III Named District Director for Birmingham Wage and Hour Division

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division has announced the selection of Oliver Peebles III to serve as the district director for the Birmingham office, Gulf Coast District. Prior to his appointment, he served as the assistant district director.

“Oliver is a valuable member of the Wage and Hour team,” said John McKeon, regional administrator for the Wage and Hour Division’s Southeastern Region. “His dedication to America’s workers will continue in his new position.”

As district director, Peebles will administer the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, which sets minimum wage, overtime pay, record-keeping and child labor standards; the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Peebles began his career in 1974, as a Wage and Hour trainee in Jackson, Miss. Later, he served as a Wage and Hour investigator in several field offices. In 1997, he was named Birmingham’s assistant district director.

He has received many awards recognizing his service to working Americans, including the “Secretary’s Exceptional Achievement Award” and the “Distinguished Career Service Award.”

A native Mississippian, Peebles graduated from Mississippi Valley State University, Itta Bena, where he is a lifetime alumni and a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

He is also active in community and professional organizations. Currently, he is the president of the Birmingham Federal Executive Association and a member of the Optimist Club, the Meridian Metropolitan Elk’s Lodge, and the Executive Board of Directors for the Birmingham federal coordinating committee of the Combined Federal Campaign, serving as chairman in 2004.

Part of the U.S. Labor Department’s Employment Standards Administration, the Wage and Hour Division also administers the Employee Polygraph Protection Act, several immigration law provisions and the Davis-Bacon and Service Contract Acts, which govern federal contract prevailing wages.

The Birmingham district office is located in the Medical Forum, Suite 656, 950 22nd Street, N., phone: (205) 731-1305, and serves all of Alabama and Mississippi.
