Project Title: Precast Structural Elements for Bridge Construction
Description: This synthesis study will summarize the literature and survey transportation agencies and others to document the use of prefabricated components and systems that minimize traffic disruption in the work zone while maintaining construction quality. It will focus on rehabilitation and replacement of commonly used bridges using the "Get in, Get out, and Stay out" philosophy. The study will include: Benefits of minimal traffic disruption (e.g., safety); Quality Issues (e.g., durability, connections); Constructability (e.g., design considerations -- component sizes and weights, transport, and erection); and Costs (e.g., user, construction, maintenance).

Project Title: Behavior of Cast-in-Place Slabs Connecting Precast Slab and Steel Girder Assemblies
Description: TxDOT is developing a system for casting full-depth concrete slabs on steel girders on the ground prior to lifting them into their final position. This system reduces on-site construction time, minimizing traffic disruption and increasing safety in construction zones. The bridge system requires that narrow (~2-ft.) cast-in-place connecting slabs join the precast slabs. The connecting slabs run longitudinally between slab-girder assemblies and transversely at the interior bents. The precast slabs are connected directly to the cast-in-place approach slabs. The only slab expansion joints occur at the far end of the approach slab some 20-40 ft. beyond the end of the bridge. This project will conduct physical testing to provide field data and actual performance of this system in the areas of: The magnitude of live load bending moment and shear in the longitudinal connecting slab. The magnitude of live load bending moment and longitudinal force in the transverse connecting slabs at the interior bents and abutment. The magnitude of bending moment and shear in the transverse connecting slabs at the abutment due to potential support settlement. Thermal and shrinkage forces on the system. Fatigue effects on the system. This project will produce design guidelines for constructing the connecting slabs to resist the superimposed moments, shears,k and forces determined through the testing.

Project Title: Detail and System Development for Full Depth Precast Concrete Bridge Deck Panels
Project Details: http://rip.trb.org/browse/dproject.asp?n=9178
Project Title: Development of Precast Bridge Construction Systems
Description: Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Research Project 0-1748, "Design and Detailing of Precast Bent Cap System," is complete and has produced recommended design specifications and details for precast bent cap-to-column and precast bent cap-to-pile connections that are ready for implementation by TxDOT bridge design engineers. This technology can be extended to make use of other precast elements, such a abutment caps, backwalls, wingwalls, bridge slabs, etc., in combination with existing precast superstructure elements to develop economical, safe, aesthetically pleasing bridge systems that can be assembled rapidly using conventional construction methods. The research team will develop systems with input from representatives of the precast concrete industry, the bridge construction industry, and the TxDOT project monitoring committee. The expected product is a set of draft specifications for precast concrete bridge systems.

Abstract: This research report advances the development of precast bridge substructures by describing development of a precast bent cap system for non-seismic regions. It includes a design methodology, construction guidelines, and example details for connecting a precast bent cap to cast-in-place columns or precast trestle piles. It addresses three categories of connection details: grout pockets, grouted vertical ducts, and bolted connections.

Project Title: Rapid Bridge Deck Replacement: A Field Demonstration and Load Test
Description: This research investigated composite performance of precast bridge elements and systems used for the purpose of rapid bridge replacement. The demonstration site was a 50-foot simple span with an adjacent identical span. One bridge was redecked using conventional cast-in-places techniques, and the other was redecked with eight precast full-depth panels. Post-construction load tests and deflection measurements from the demonstration project were compared to results obtained using a 3D computer model. Results provided convincing evidence of the composite performance of the completed test bridge.

Report No.: FHWA/TX-88-324-5F

Abstract: This report describes a full-size demonstration of a rapid bridge deck replacement concept. The demonstration used a sand mortar made with rapid-setting epoxy to provide the shear tie between precast concrete deck panels and existing steel stringer beams. The demonstration site was a 50-ft. simple span that serves as part of the SPUR 326 overpass over the AT&SF railroad tracks in downtown Lubbock. Eight precast panels, each 6 ft. 3 in. x 45 ft. x 8 in. were used to form the experimental deck. Subsequent load tests and deflection measurements were compared to results obtained using a 3D computer model.
