Biographical Sketch:

Mark Sogge has been with the Colorado Plateau Research Station since 1990, first with the National Park Service and ultimately with the USGS. As Station Leader since 2002, he supervises and oversees CPRS operations and serves as a liaison to Northern Arizona University. Mark's research has focused on the ecology and management of rare and endangered birds, riparian bird communities, and avian inventory and monitoring techniques; his current research involves the endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher (SWWF). Mark holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from San Jose State University, and a Masters degree in Zoology from the University of California, Davis.

Project List

  • Southwestern Willow Flycatcher site - http://sbsc.wr.usgs.gov/cprs/research/projects/swwf/.
I currently work on a variety of collaborative studies involving the status, ecology, and management of the endangered Southwestern Willow Flycatcher. These studies include: landscape-scale, spatiotemporal modeling of flycatcher habitat; development of survey techniques; synthesis of rangewide survey data; banding and demography studies in Arizona; genetic research on WIllow Flycathers across North America; flycatcher physiology; breeding habitat use; and wintering distribution, habitat use, and ecology.
  • Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Currently, I am collaborating with other scientists on studies of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, another Neotropical migratory bird that is of management and conservation concern. Our research involves cuckoo surveys, habitat measurements, and microclimate conditions.
