Insulation and Fittings for Power Wires and Cables

30 CFR 56.12008and 57.12008

30 CFR 75.515

30 CFR 77.505

56/57.12008
Power wires and cables shall be insulated adequately where they pass into or out of electrical compartments.  Cables shall enter metal frames of motors, splice boxes, and electrical compartments only through proper fittings. When insulated wires, other than cables, pass through metal frames, the holes shall be substantially bushed with insulated bushings.

There is no MSHA policy for this standard.

77.505

Cables shall enter metal frames of motors, splice boxes, and electric compartments only through proper fittings.  When insulated wires, other than cables, pass through metal frames, the holes shall be substantially bushed with insulated bushings.

MSHA policy can be found here: 77.505

These standards require that wires and cables be adequately insulated when they pass into or out of electrical compartments (metal and nonmetal only).  They also require that cables enter metal frames, splice boxes, and electrical compartments through proper bushings or fittings.  Insulated wires passing through metal frames will be substantially bushed with insulated bushings.

Issues to Consider in Determining Compliance:

·        Are wires and cables adequately insulated where they pass into or out of electrical compartments?

Ø      Are wires or cables free of chafing, nicks, or wear where they enter into or exit electrical compartments?

Ø      Was insulation replaced on wires or cables following installation or a repair?

·        Do cables enter metal frames of motors, splice boxes, or electrical compartments through fittings designed for that purpose?

·        Is a substantial bushing installed where wires, other than cables, pass through metal frames?
