An innovative and colorful U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) map portraying Hawaiian volcanoes, prepared in cooperation with the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center, the University of Hawai'i's School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, recently received the 2005 Outstanding Publication Award from the Association of Earth Science Editors. The map, Hawaii's Volcanoes Revealed, depicts the submarine volcanic history of Hawai'i in vivid colors representing various stages of historical geologic development.

To learn more about the map, read "Scientists Unveil New Map of Hawai'i Sea Floor" in Sound Waves, December 2003-January 2004.
