Work PortfolioSimple Search | Advanced Search | List All | Help Volpe Conducts Environmental Compliance Reviews Since 1993, the Volpe Center's Environmental Engineering Division has been conducting environmental compliance reviews for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Coast Guard, and the Postal Service at more than 300 facilities nationwide. The Division is currently providing support to the Postal Service New York Metro Area by conducting reviews at 16 facilities (i.e., processing and distribution plants, vehicle maintenance facilities, and air mail facilities). The purpose of the environmental audits is to assist federal agencies in managing environmental non-compliance liabilities by identifying and correcting non-compliance situations and thus reducing the number of potential agency enforcement actions. The programs include a review of whether each specified facility has complied with applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations; whether the facility matches the agencies' own policies and procedures; and whether the environmental management systems that currently exist at the facility are adequate. Each review provides a preventive, systematic, documented, periodic, and objective look at facility operations and practices that have environmental impacts and requirements. The reviews also serve to evaluate the risks of regulated and unregulated practices. The information collected under the review programs typically is preserved in electronic file format and entered into the agency's database for support to the facilities management function.
