U.S. Labor Department to Help Nuclear Weapons Workers File Claims in Bradenton, FL

BRADENTON, Fl — The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the Savannah River Resource Center will be available to answer questions about the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA) on Aug. 3-4, 2004, in Bradenton. In addition, current and former employees of contractors, subcontractors and eligible survivors of former employees of American Beryllium Company will receive assistance filing claims under the EEOICPA.

The EEOICPA became effective on July 31, 2001. DOL administers Part B of the Act, which provides a lump sum payment of up to $150,000 and medical benefits to covered employees. Current and former employees of the Department of Energy (DOE), its contractors and subcontractors, employees of atomic weapon employers (AWE) and employees of designated beryllium vendors may be eligible for these benefits. Qualified survivors of covered employees, including adult children, also may be eligible to receive the lump sum compensation. Specific illnesses covered by Part B of the EEOICPA are radiogenic cancers, beryllium diseases and chronic silicosis.

Florida is home to eight covered facilities, including American Beryllium Company located in Sarasota. Records, including purchase orders and shipping/receipt records, indicate that American Beryllium manufactured parts for Dow/Rocky Flats in 1968 and for the Y-12 Plant in the 1980s. Other covered facilities include Armour Fertilizer Works (Bartow); Gardinier, Inc. (Tampa); International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (Mulberry); Pinellas Plant (Clearwater); University of Florida (Gainesville); Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corp. (Nichols); and W.R. Grace Co., Agricultural Chemical Division (Ridgewood).

Workers or survivors who need help filling out claim forms can schedule appointments by calling (toll free) 1-866-666-4606, or visiting the resource center during the hours listed below.
