DOL-DOE Traveling Resource Center Coming to Western New York to Serve Current and Former Nuclear Workers

BUFFALO, NY — A joint U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Traveling Resource Center will be in two Buffalo area locations during the week of October 28, 2003, to provide information and claims assistance to individuals who may have or plan on filing a claim under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).

The EEOICPA, which became effective on July 31, 2001, is administered by the DOL, and provides for a lump sum compensation amount of $150,000 and payment of medical benefits to current and former employees of the Department of Energy (DOE), contractors and subcontractors to DOE, employees of Atomic Weapon Employers (AWE) and employees of designated Beryllium Vendors. Qualified survivors of covered employees, including adult children, are also eligible for benefits. Specific diseases covered by the EEOICPA are radiogenic cancers, beryllium diseases and chronic silicosis.

Western New York is home to several former Atomic Weapon Employers (AWE) sites and DOE clean up facilities, including: Ashland Oil (Tonawanda), Bethlehem Steel (Lackawanna), Bliss and Laughlin Steel (Buffalo), Carborundum Company (Niagara Falls), Electro Metallurgical (Niagara Falls), Hooker Electro Chemical (Niagara Falls), Lake Ontario Ordnance Works (Niagara Falls), Linde Air Products (Buffalo), Linde Ceramics Plant (Tonawanda), Seaway Industrial Park (Tonawanda), Simonds Saw and Steel (Lockport), Titanium Alloys Manufacturing (Niagara Falls), Utica St. Warehouse (Buffalo) and West Valley Demonstration Project (West Valley).
