Research Category: Heavy Metal Contamination of Soil/Water

Description:

Objective:

The goal of this research was the determination of the extent to which instrumental neutron activation analysis might contribute to the characterization of hazardous waste sites through the analysis of soils and other solids for heavy metal content.

Approach:

A literature review has been conducted. Protocols for instrumental neutron activation analysis of heavy metals in soils and other samples were developed with special emphasis on sample collection and mixing. Specific tasks in the investigation included the following: a comparison of results of analyses of soil samples by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA); a search for correlations between concentrations of heavy elements and potential pathfinder elements; a comparison of the elemental analyses achievable with short-duration irradiation followed immediately by gamma-ray spectroscopy, as compared to analyses achievable with long-term irradiation and delay prior to spectroscopy-the former associated with short-lived radionuclides; an investigation of the uncertainties introduced in the laboratory during the mixing and sampling from field-gathered specimens-not an investigation of uncertainties associated with field-collection of specimens; and an investigation of the uncertainties introduced in the laboratory during irradiation and spectroscopy and due to interferences among radionuclides of different elements emitting gamma rays of nearly equal energies.

Expected Results:

A need exists for inexpensive rapid methods of instrumental analyses to identify hazardous contaminants in soils and other solids. Instrumental neutron activation analysis has the potential to be used for rapid screening of multiple samples using nondestructive analyses involving no chemical separations.
