Specifically, the two 1997 NSRCG follow-up panels -- one panel for those who responded to the 1995 survey, and a second panel for those who did not respond -- did not directly ask whether the respondent paid for professional training. Instead, the follow-up panels asked only how many days of training the respondent paid for. If the respondent said they paid for any days of training, this variable's value was set to "Yes". If they didn't pay for any days of training, the value was set to "No".
The algorithm was based on the following variables:
