Scientific name: Rana muscosa

Common name: Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog

Size: 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm)

Distinguishing characters: A small frog species; lower abdomen and underside of hindlegs yellow or orange; yellowish or reddish color on dorsum with black or brown spots or blotches; smells like garlic when handled.

Juveniles: Similar to adults, but less color under legs.

Dimorphism: Male develops nuptial pads on thumb base during breeding season.

Similar species: Hyla cadaverina, Hyla regilla: Both have toe pads. Rana catesbeiana: Groin often dark spotted, lacking yellow color; smooth skin. Rana boylii: Underside of hind legs yellow; triangular, buff-colored patch on snout. Rana aurora: Underside of hind legs and lower abdomen red overlying yellow ground color; prominent dorsolateral folds and eyestripe. Rana pipiens: Has distinct dorsolateral folds and uniform spots.

Additional notes: Uncommon or rare within study area; prefers mountain creeks and lakes.
