Project Summary Sheet

U.S. Geological Survey, Greater Everglades Science Initiative (Place-Based Studies)

Fiscal Year 2003 Project Summary Report

Project Title: South Florida Information Access Geospatial Interface

Project Start Date: 10/1/2001 Project End Date: 9/30/2004

Web Sites: http://sofia.usgs.gov

Location (Subregions, Counties, Park or Refuge): All

Funding Source: USGS's Greater Everglades Science Initiative (PBS)

Principal Investigator(s): Roy Sonenshein

Project Personnel: Bruce Irvin, Joann Dixon

Supporting Organizations:

Associated / Linked Projects: other SOFIA projects

Overview & Objective(s): A geospatial interface will be developed using ArcIMS software. The interface will provide a means of accessing information stored in the SOFIA database and the SOFIA data exchange web site through a geospatial query. The spatial data will be served using the ArcSDE software, which provides a mechanism for storing spatial data in a relational database. A spatial database will be developed from existing data sets, including national USGS data sets, the Florida Geographic Digital Library, and other available data sets. Additional data sets will be developed from the published data sets available from PBS and other projects.

Status: The ArcIMS interface has been developed to serve the spatial data. Minor changes are still needed based on feedback received at the GEER conference. Spatial data sets have been developed from data published by the USGS, including PBS funded projects and other related USGS projects. Metadata records are being developed and reviewed for all data sets. Data sets will then be loaded in the ArcSDE database and metadata records will be posted on the SOFIA website.

Recent & Planned Products: The initial phase of the ArcIMS interface will be released to the public during the summer of 2003. Additional data sets will be added as they become available. Changes will be made to the interface as needed in FY03 and FY04 based on feedback from users. The interface will also be modified to improve performance and to take advantage of new features released with the ArcIMS software.

Relevance to Greater Everglades Restoration Information Needs: The geospatial interface will provide access to information from the USGS and other agencies for resource managers, scientist and others and facilitate science-based decision making as the basis for Everglades Restoration.
