Lakota Studies 400/600:  Special Topics:  Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Science

Unit 1 Assignment

This week, the assignment is to do the following 2 things:

1)  Lab Exercise 1  - visit the link for Lab 1.  The lab includes an introduction to some of the functions in ArcView GIS, practice in downloading and unzipping a data set, analyzing and querying a world data set, and  joining a table.

To complete the lab, highlight the whole web page with your cursor, and copy it to WordPad or your favorite word processor.  Paste the text there.  Fill in your answers, and email me the whole document when complete.  Follow this procedure with each lab.

2)  Go to the following web site and read the Shockwave version or the text version of "GIS Touches Our Everyday Lives."  Write a 1 page paper where you react to the article, giving your impressions of it, and also list a few ways of how you think GIS might impact YOUR everyday life.  Email me the paper.
