I rode the bus or train to work for 43 of the 45 years that I was employed by corporate America. That practice, combined with a good salary and wise investing, has given me a very comfortable retirement.

I take the bus and train whenever it is practicable. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) have greatly improved public transit in Dallas as well as between Dallas and Fort Worth.

Public transit in the DFW are has improved dramatically over the last decade or so. But it has a long way to go if it is to serve the majority of people in this area. Thankfully, there are plans afoot to expand and improve the system.

I love the Lawrence Transit System. I actually sold my car and began using it as my main method of transportation because it is so convienent, and ecologically smart. Not to mention it's cheaper, and when I pick my daughter up from school I can immediately begin reading to her and talking to her about her day. That would have to wait 30 minutes in rush hour traffic to happen otherwise. I'm never angered because of road rage and I am generally on time. The money I save on insurance alone gives me a nice little "cab fund" if I'm ever in a pinch.

Prior to that I had driven a car for 10 years every day of my life. My car was my best friend. I have to admit it did take a few months to get used to it, but in the long run it has been an amazing resource for my family. In addition we get more exercise each day.

Even if you don't want to give up your car, I would urge everyone to try the Lawrence Transit System.
