NEA Opera Honors Inaugural Awards Concert

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Dana Gioia, Chairman, will recognize the recipients of the first individual NEA honorific in more than a quarter century: the NEA Opera Honors, created to celebrate the art and artists of opera in America. The inaugural event will take place on Friday, October 31 at 8 p.m. in the Sidney Harman Hall of the Harman Center for the Arts, Washington, DC.
The first class of honorees, Leontyne Price, Carlisle Floyd, Richard Gaddes and James Levine, are being acknowledged for their exceptional contributions to opera in America. With the support of Congress and the White House, the NEA was authorized to establish the nation’s highest honor in opera.
The October 31 NEA Opera Honors Awards Concert is being produced by OPERA America and Washington National Opera (WNO). The evening’s host will be mezzo-soprano Susan Graham. Presenters of the awards will include Chairman Gioia along with Marc A. Scorca, OPERA America President and CEO; Plácido Domingo, WNO General Director; and Ms. Graham.
Performances by soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists of the WNO will be accompanied by the WNO Orchestra. In addition to these performances, video tributes and presentations for each honoree will bring the lives and artistic achievements of these artists to life, with each honoree being present to respond.
The NEA Opera Honors Awards Concert will be a live national broadcast via the WFMT Radio Network to Chicago on October 31, with approximately 45 additional WFMT Radio Network stations covering 100 markets for a tape-delayed broadcast on Saturday, November 1.
Advanced tickets for the general public are no longer available. Unclaimed house seats will be released beginning at 7:30 pm on performance day. Admission is free. After those tickets are distributed, approximately 200 tickets will be released for viewing a live video feed in the Center's Forum Room. The Harman Center for the Arts is located at 610 F Street NW in Washington, DC.
