Research Needs in the EPA Regions Covered by the Center for Hazardous Substances in Urban Environments

EPA Grant Number: R828771C014
Subproject: this is subproject number 014 , established and managed by the Center Director under grant R828771
(EPA does not fund or establish subprojects; EPA awards and manages the overall grant for this center).

Center: HSRC (2001) - Center for Hazardous Substances in Urban Environments
Center Director: Bouwer, Edward J.
Title: Research Needs in the EPA Regions Covered by the Center for Hazardous Substances in Urban Environments
Investigators: Oguntimein, G. B. , Chen, Guangming , Williams, Sedley
Institution: Morgan State University
EPA Project Officer: Lasat, Mitch
Project Period: October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2007
RFA: Hazardous Substance Research Centers - HSRC (2001)
Research Category: Hazardous Waste/Remediation

Description:

Objective:

The activities of humans over the years have impacted the environment and are of major concern to governments and communities. The activities of industries also have resulted in the generation of hazardous wastes, which have impacted many communities across the United States, especially in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 1 (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont); Region 2 (New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands); and Region 3 (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia). The objectives of this project are to: (1) identify the research needs in EPA Regions 1, 2, and 3 through visits and interviews with EPA officials as well as state Department of Environment officials, environmental industries and other stakeholders; and (2) produce an assessment report on these research needs with the rankings of importance. This report would identify possible hazardous waste sites/Superfund brownfield sites in the three EPA Regions as well as the types of contaminants at the sites and communities impacted by the hazardous wastes, which the center researchers could use for case studies.
