FY 2008 Grant Awards: Challenge America Fast-Track Review Grants

ALABAMA

Rural Members Association
Aliceville, Alabama
To support the Freedom Creek Blues Festival.  The two-day event will be held at the home of Willie King in rural Old Memphis, Alabama.  Proposed artists include Jody Williams, Jerry "Boogie" McCain, and Willie King and the Liberators. 

ARIZONA

Chamber Music PLUS
Tucson, Arizona
To support the creation and performance of a new chamber theater work, Mesmeric Mozart.  The work, featuring an original score by composer Libby Larsen, will be based on the life of Marie Paradis, a blind pianist, composer, and acquaintance of W.A. Mozart.

Red Rocks Music Festival
Phoenix, Arizona

To support performances of music inspired by the Holocaust.  Related poetry readings, lectures, and visual arts presentations will accompany the performance. 

West Valley Fine Arts Council
Avondale, Arizona
To support performances and related activities by Ailey II dancers. The company, which began in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, will perform and conduct lecture demonstrations for students in the Phoenix metropolitan area, including the Tolleson School District.

CALIFORNIA

3rd I South Asian Independent Film
San Francisco, California
To support the Annual San Francisco South Asian International Film Festival.  The sixth annual festival will screen full-length feature films, documentaries, and short films by media artists and independent filmmakers from the United States, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose
San Jose, California
To support performances of Rivers – A Mystical Journey, featuring original Indian choreography and music by composer Babu Parameswaran.  The performances will illustrate the use of classical and contemporary Indian music and dance traditions. 

Arab American Congress of Silicon Valley
San Jose, California
To support the annual Arab Film Festival.  Staged at venues in Berkeley, San Jose, and San Francisco, the 12th annual festival will screen feature films and documentaries that present Arab and Arab-American culture. 

Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center
San Francisco, California

To support a retrospective exhibition of Flo Oy Wong, a mixed media artist. The exhibition will be part of the annual United States of Asian America Festival at the SomArts Cultural Center in San Francisco.

Great Leap
Los Angeles, California
To support Collaboratory, an intensive performing arts workshop for emerging artists taught by guest artists.  The workshops culminate in performances of new work created by the participants. 

Homeboy Industries
Los Angeles, California

To support Homeboy Press, a literary magazine employing at-risk youth.  Authors Luis Rodriguez and Leslie Schwartz will mentor program participants. 

Precita Eyes Muralists
San Francisco, California
To support the creation of the mural Making Friends at the Bret Harte Elementary School.  Artists Brenda Miller and Susan Cervantes will lead the visual arts project. 

Prescott-Joseph Center for Community Enhancement
Oakland, California
To support an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet titled Johnny and Ebony.  The production will explore themes of division in the African American community, including questions of loyalty. 

Slavonic Cultural Center
San Francisco, California

To support CroatiaFest 2008.  Activities include a concert featuring traditional music and dance, a tamburitza master class, a film screening, and a photography exhibit.  Proposed artists include the Koraci Croatian Dance Ensemble, St. Anthony's Tamburitza and Kolo Ensemble Croatia, Tamburaski Orkestar Momci, and the Slavonian Traveling Band. 

COLORADO

International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management
Denver, Colorado
To support the Indigenous Film and Arts Festival.  Exploring the theme "Contact: Conflict and Resolution," programming will focus on work of indigenous filmmakers. 

Su Teatro
Denver, Colorado

To support the production of Daniel Valdez's Ollin, a play exploring the clash between the Aztec and Spanish during the conquest of Mexico.  Valdez will also direct the play and participate in residency activities.

CONNECTICUT

Connecticut Children's Theatre
Essex, Connecticut
To support the production of Pinocchio, a Musical Journey and associated outreach activities. The classic story, featuring an original script and score including work by playwright Patty Carver, will be presented to youth audiences in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Sustainable Development Institute
Washington, DC

To support the Environmental Film Festival.  Related activities include discussions with filmmaker Deirdre Towers and a performance by storyteller Antonio Rocha, recognized for his tales of jungle animals and ecological themes. 

FLORIDA

ACA of Central Florida
Longwood, Florida
To support a concert of traditional Indian music, featuring the Chatteerjee family.  This acclaimed family will perform on Indian instruments the sitar and table.

Aequalis
Lake Worth, Florida
To support A Harvest of Belle Glade Voices, featuring actor/playwright Akin Babatunde.  The musical theater work will incorporate oral histories of residents of the eastern shore of Lake Okeechobee.

Artist Series of Tallahassee
Tallahassee, Florida
To support performances and outreach activities by the Calder Quartet, a string ensemble.  As part of the Artist Series 2007-2008, the Calder Quartet will perform and conduct related workshops for residents of Gadsden and Leon counties.  

ArtSouth
Homestead, Florida
To support an exhibition featuring painter and sculptor Romero Britto.  In addition to the exhibition, project activities will include workshops and lecture-demonstrations for residents of Homestead and South Dade.

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra
Port Charlotte, Florida
To support the Blue Violin Concert featuring violinist Doug Cameron and related outreach activity.  Prior to the concert at the Center for Performing Arts and Education, Cameron will conduct workshops for string instrumentalists.

GEORGIA

Albany Symphony Association
Albany, Georgia
To support the Creole Romantics, a series of concerts featuring the Albany State University Concert Chorale and guest pianist Marcia Hood.  In addition to a performance for the general public, two concerts will be for Doughtery County grade school students.  

Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum
LaGrange, Georgia
To support the Creative Youth Art League Exhibition and the concurrent exhibit of works by visual artist Nancy Olney.  The project is one of the Museum's many programs for communities of West Georgia and East Alabama.

Horizon Theatre Company
Atlanta, Georgia
To support the New South Play Festival.  Project activities include a production of Valetta Anderson's Blue Water Fishing, workshops, staged readings, and the New South Young Playwrights Concert and Festival.

Several Dancers Core
Decatur, Georgia
To support performances by the Pearson Widrig Dance Theater.  The artists will collaborate with community members, many of whom have relocated from the Gulf Coast, to create performances of Katrina, Katrina: Love Letters to New Orleans.

HAWAII

Hawaii's Volcano Circus
Pahoa, Hawaii
To support the Puna Performing Arts Festival, designed to involve impoverished youth.  A series of workshops in circus arts, music, drama, and dance will culminate in public performances. 

ILLINOIS

Asian Improv aRts Midwest
Oak Park, Illinois

To support the Chicago Taiko Legacy, including performances and residency activities.  The fifth annual event will feature Japanese drumming ensembles JASC Tsukasa Taiko, San Francisco's Gen Taiko, and Japanese lute artist Chizuru Kineya. 

City of Bloomington, Illinois
Bloomington, Illinois

To support associated outreach activities and performances of From Temple to Theater by the Ragamala Music and Dance Theater.  The project will highlight the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam with performances at the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.

Cultivadores
Rantoul, Illinois
To support the creation of an exterior mural at the Culivadores facility in Rantoul.  Lead artists will mentor apprentice artists in designing and creating the mural and the process will be documented for a public photographic exhibition. 

University of Illinois at Springfield
Springfield, Illinois
To support performances by the Kronos Quartet.  A performance of composer Terry Riley's Sun Rings will be preceded by a panel discussion with astronomy/physics professors and Kronos artistic staff.

IOWA

Dubuque Symphony Orchestra
Dubuque, Iowa
To support associated activities and a concert featuring Gareth Johnson.  Johnson is a winner of the International Sphinx Competition that recognizes young, ethnically diverse string instrumentalists.  The concert is part of a series of concerts that will feature African American composers and musicians during Black History Month.

KENTUCKY

Juneteenth Festival
Louisville, Kentucky
To support the annual Juneteenth Jamboree of New Plays.  Festival activities include workshops with director/actor Ron Himes, founder and producing director of the Saint Louis Black Repertory Company. 

Living Arts & Science Center
Lexington, Kentucky
To support a media arts project for underserved youth.  Media artist Ellen Frankenstein and composer Tripp Bratton will work with participants to create film shorts that will premiere during the Roots and Heritage Festival in downtown Lexington. 

LOUISIANA

Louisiana Art and Science Museum
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
To support the exhibition Jim Henson's Fantastic World.  Puppeteer Peter Brooke, creative supervisor at Jim Henson's Creative Shop, will host a Build-A-Puppet workshop for up to 200 visitors.

Louisiana ArtWorks
New Orleans, Louisiana
To support an artist residency with glass artist Beth Lipman.  Lipman will participate in a glass blowing demonstration, workshops, and panel discussions. 

MAINE

Bowdoin Summer Music Festival
Brunswick, Maine
To support the EuroFest classical music concert series.  Artists scheduled to participate include pianist Emma Tahmizian, classical guitarist Ricardo Iznaloa, and composers Huang Ruo and Samuel Adler.   

Greater Portland Landmarks
Portland, Maine
To support a convening of historic preservationists, design professionals, and community leaders to discuss successful design principles.  The participants will learn tools to aid in rehabilitating historic structures and creating new buildings for cultural, educational, and residential purposes. 

Maine Fiberarts
Topsham, Maine
To support the production of Maine Fiberarts Tour Map: Studios & Farms.  The publication will include a state map, a calendar of events, and educational content.  The organization will also coordinate an open studio weekend.

MARYLAND

Garrett Lakes Arts Festival
McHenry, Maryland
To support a series of concerts by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.  Performances will be conducted by Marvin Hamlisch and Andrés Cárdenés.

MASSACHUSETTS

Provincetown Theater Foundation
Provincetown, Massachusetts

To support a production of The Notebook by playwright Wendy Kesselman.  Kesselman will travel to Provincetown to participate in audience discussions, workshops, and other activities.

MICHIGAN

Ella Sharp Museum Association of Jackson
Jackson, Michigan
To support Ella Sharp Ceramics: Tips, Tools and Techniques, a symposium and ceramics workshop led by ceramicist Bill Vangilder.  The workshop on contemporary ceramics is typical of the museum's outreach programs that include lecture series, curator chats, and gallery walks.

Flint Cultural Center Corporation
Flint, Michigan
To support the AmericanRoots Music Outreach Project, featuring residencies by the Carolina Chocolate Drops and the JazzReach Performing Arts and Education Association's resident ensemble, the Metta Quintet.  Residency activities include demonstrations as well as in-school and public performances.

Michigan Classic Ballet Company
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
To support performances of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.  Related educational activities will include a curriculum guide, introduction to the different balletic styles offered by the company, a lecture, and post-performance discussion. 

Northwestern Michigan College Foundation

To support the installation of Collaborative Advanced Navigation Virtual Art Studio (CANVAS).  CANVAS provides a space for creating and presenting computer-assisted multi-dimensional art projects.

Plymouth Symphony Society
Plymouth, Michigan
To support the Fusion Festival–Inspirations from India, featuring sitarist Hasu Patel.  Patel will premiere a work commissioned for the festival. 

Presque Isle District Library
Rogers City, Michigan
To support the commissioning and scoring of a music composition by Brian Belanger.  The premiere of the composition is planned to be part of the documentary With Loss of Life: Remembering the SS Carl D. Bradley

St. Clair County Community College
Port Huron, Michigan
To support the 50th edition of Patterns, a literary magazine.  Guest authors Franz Wright and Michael Perry will commemorate the milestone with readings. 

Waterfront Festival
Saugatuck, Michigan
To support the Waterfront Film Festival.  Festival activities include question and answer sessions with national filmmakers and an outdoor film screening. 

MINNESOTA

Franconia Sculpture Park
Shafer, Minnesota
To support the Fall Arts & Music Festival.  Related activities include docent tours of the twenty-acre sculpture park, music performances, and poetry readings. 

VSA arts of Minnesota
Minneapolis, Minnesota
To support an artist residency with Guinean dancer/musician and NEA National Heritage Fellow Sidiki Condé and balafonist Balla Kouyate.  The series of school and community presentations will culminate with a performance by Tokounou, an ensemble created by Condé and Kouyate. 

MISSOURI

Jazz St. Louis
St. Louis, Missouri
To support artist residencies with trumpeter Terell Stafford and pianist Cyrus Chestnut. Residency activities include clinics as well as in-school and public performances. 

MONTANA

Alberta Bair Theater Corporation
Billings, Montana
To support the Dance on the Prairie Series.  Diavolo, a contemporary dance company, and Ballet Folkorico Quetzalli de Veracruz, a Mexican folkloric company, will perform and participate in community outreach activities as part of the series. 

Billings Symphony Society
Billings, Montana
To support a performance and programming by cellist Alisa Weilerstein.  Ms. Weilerstein will perform Shostakovich's Cello Concerto, conduct a master class for aspiring local cellists, and participate in an open rehearsal to which area youth will be invited.

Great Falls Symphony Association
Great Falls, Montana
To support a performance by flutists Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway.  Band and orchestra students from across Montana will be invited to an open rehearsal with the Galways.

Headwaters Dance Co.
Missoula, Montana
To support performances of Montana Suite Part III: Rocky Mountain Front.  Preceding the concert, the company's dancers will offer master classes at participating schools.  Following the performances, acclaimed choreographer Lar Lubovich will join local students and audiences in talk-back sessions. 

NEBRASKA

Central Plains Foundation
Holbrook, Nebraska
To support the development of Enjoy Nebraska, a Web site promoting Nebraska cultural tourism.  The site will include a calendar of events and an interactive map that will showcase working art and craft studios, galleries, museums, and other cultural entities.  This project is an outgrowth of a program developed in partnership with the Nebraska Arts Council.

Lux Center for the Arts
Lincoln, Nebraska
To support visual artists Therman Statom and Eddie Dominguez's workshops/demonstrations with foster children.  Project partners include the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation's Foster Youth Initiative, Court Appointed Special Advocates for Lancaster County, and Nebraska Foster and Adoptive Parent Association. 

NEW JERSEY

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company
Fort Lee, New Jersey
To support the Year of the Rat Celebration.  Participants will include dancer Yao-Zhong Zhang, pipa musician Hong Tao Sun, and paper cutting artist Hou-Tien Cheng.

People and Stories Gente y Cuentos
Trenton, New Jersey
To support literary workshops with guest artists Yusef Komunyakaa and Lauren B. Davis.  Partnering organizations are Dunham Hall, an affordable housing facility for formerly homeless women; and Operation Fatherhood, an organization that encourages good parenting and family involvement.  Project participants will be selected from these organizations. 

Perkins Center for the Arts
Moorestown, New Jersey
To support the creation of a mural led by artist Cesar Viveros.  In conjunction with the creation of the mural, art workshops will be offered to youth through referrals by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and Camden Community Connections.

NEW MEXICO

Central Consolidated School District #22
Kirtland, New Mexico
To support the residency of playwright Sharon Hatch French and the production of Joseph of the Village.  The play recounts Navajo history and will be presented in public performances following Ms. French's residency with youth from the gifted and talented program. The school district serves approximately 7,000 students of the Navajo nation. 

Mimbres Region Arts Council
Silver City, New Mexico
To support the Youth Mural Program.  The program pairs professional artists with youth to create murals expressing the culture and history of the Grant County region.

NEW YORK

Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival
Canandaigua, New York
To support performances by the Amelia Piano Trio and the Corigliano Quartet, a string quartet.  These performances will be part of the 2008 Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival that is held in the rural Finger Lakes region of New York.   

Catskill Symphony Orchestra
Oneonta, New York
To support harmonica master Howard Levy in a concert performance and outreach activities.  A Grammy winner, Mr. Levy will perform with the symphony, as well as participate in enrichment programs for area public school youth from a rural, three-county area in central New York.   

Chinese-American Arts Council
New York, New York
To support Chinese opera productions featuring guests Charlene Tong of the Beijing Opera and Lin Yin of the Chinese Min Opera.  Traditional Chinese theater integrates dialogue, ornate costumes, stylized movements, and poetic narration.  The performances will take place at the Chinese Community Center and the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts Avery Fisher Hall. 

CITYarts
New York, New York
To support the creation of a mural led by artist Adam C. Peachy.  The project is part of a program that engages youth in the creation of public art that reflects the character and strength of communities located in the five boroughs of New York City.

Classical Theatre of Harlem
New York, New York
To support the production of Emancipation by playwright Ty Jones.  The work is based on Nat Turner's participation in a slave rebellion in 1831.  The development of this work was enhanced through a collaborative partnership with the Frederick Douglas Creative Arts Center and The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Heart of Brooklyn Cultural Institutions
Brooklyn, New York
To support wider distribution of the Cultural Calendar Highlights inserts which will be placed into Courier Life publications.  The illustrated calendar lists the programs and activities of a collection of Brooklyn's cultural organizations including the Brooklyn Children's Museum and Brooklyn Public Library. 

Making Books Sing
New York, New York
To support the musical theater production of Patricia Polacco's book The Butterfly, by Barbara Zinn Krieger and Charles Greenberg.  Prior to the production, short musicals will be created through a series of workshops at housing shelters. 

New Community Cinema Club
Huntington, New York
To support the film series Creativity: An Eternal Mystery.   Following each film, guest speakers will engage the audience in informal discussions.  Previous speakers have included director Linda Hattendorf (The Cats of Mirikitani) and director Maryte Kavaliauskas (David Hockney-Colors of Music)

To support the workshop performance of Stephen Schwartz's Séance on a Wet Afternoon, a contemporary opera.  Schwartz and Director Scott Schwartz will participate in the staging before the official premiere at Opera Santa Barbara.

To support a series of classical music performances in rural east Texas.  Clarinetist Igor Begelman, flutist Lorna McGhee, and harpist Heidi Krutzen will serve as featured artists in cities such as Crockett, Overton, and Trinity.    

Second Generation Productions

To support ELEVEN, a festival featuring a new work by playwright Carla Ching.  The festival will also commission plays by early-career writers and present an evening showcase of one-act plays.

NORTH CAROLINA

To support a production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.  Guest artists include vocalists Ivan Griffin, Louise Toppin, and Frank Ward.

Greensboro Symphony Society
Greensboro, North Carolina
To support the Community Gospel Concert.  Scores of choristers will perform with famed gospel vocalist Wintley Phipps in celebration of Greensboro's historic civil rights sit-in events. 

Stecoah Valley Arts, Crafts & Educational Center
Robbinsville, North Carolina
To support An Appalachian Evening, a series of performances featuring regional performing artists.  Each concert is preceded by a lecture or demonstration. 

Western Piedmont Symphony – The Unifour Orchestra
Hickory, North Carolina
To support a performance by oboist Joseph Robinson, bassoonist Wilfred Roberts, clarinetist Douglas Miller, and French horn player Brice Andrus.  The concert will include the premiere of composer Edmund Cionek's The Adirondacks.

NORTH DAKOTA

Fargo Moorhead Opera Company
Fargo, North Dakota
To support Dueling Divas, a concert featuring sopranos Cynthia Lawrence and Stella Zambalis.  These nationally acclaimed vocalists will perform in Minnesota and North Dakota communities. 

OHIO

Art Opportunities
Cincinnati, Ohio
To support MuralWorks, a public art program.  Developed in partnership with the City of Cincinnati, MuralWorks is part of a community-wide initiative to engage people and employ youth as well as professional guest artists in the creation of works of public art.

Clifton Cultural Arts Center
Cincinnati, Ohio
To support design development for the renovation of the Clifton School.  The 1906 Beaux-Arts structure will be used as the main facility of the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. 

University of Akron
Akron, Ohio
To support performances by the American Shakespeare Center on Tour.  A performance will be presented specifically for high school students. 

VSA arts of Ohio
Columbus, Ohio
To support a tour of Go Dog. Go by Phoenix Theatre for Children.  During the performance, actors will engage the student audience by teaching them basic sign language that relates to the narrative. 

OREGON

Portland Jazz Festival
Portland, Oregon
To support Ornette Coleman: The Shape of Jazz to Come, part of the Portland Jazz Festival.  Symposium activities include lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and a performance by the Ornette Coleman Quartet. 

PENNSYLVANIA

County of Lackawanna
Scranton, Pennsylvania
To support guest artists for Lackawanna County ethnic festivals.  Proposed artists include gospel legends the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Salsamba Latin Jazz Group, and Joseph Tayoun, a Middle Eastern percussionist.  

Erie Philharmonic
Erie, Pennsylvania
To support Young Guns II, part of the In the Spotlight concert series.  The concert theme will focus on musical prodigies and will present teenage pianists Michelle and Christina Naughton playing works composed at an early age by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Poulenc, and Bizet. 

Market Square Concerts
Harrisburg Pennsylvania
To support a performance by the Lark Chamber Ensemble.  Percussionist Yousif Sheronick will join the ensemble in composer Daniel Bernard Roumain's Fifth String Quartet, an homage to Rosa Parks. 

Susquehanna Folk Music Society, Inc.
New Cumberland, Pennsylvania
To support the Masters of the Traditional Arts Festival.  Accomplished artists include Lakota flute player and singer Kevin Locke, Irish fiddler Kevin Burke, and luthier Wayne Henderon, all NEA National Heritage Fellows. 

Sweetwater Art Center
Sewickley, Pennsylvania
To support the MavunoFestival of African American Art and Culture.  Now in its 12th year, festival activities include a visual art exhibit, an artist residency in local schools, and a jazz concert featuring Etta Cox. 

RHODE ISLAND

Island Moving Company
Newport, Rhode Island
To support the festival Open for Dancing.  In addition to site-specific commissions, activities will include master classes led by guest artists, panel discussions, and film screenings.

SOUTH DAKOTA

Black Hills Community Theatre
Rapid City, South Dakota
To support the production of My Name Is Somebody, an original theatrical work.  Chris Lutter, a puppeteer from Puppet Art Farm and Heart of the Beast of Minneapolis will work with the Suzie Cappa Players of the Black Hills Workshop, an organization for adults with disabilities, to produce an original work. 

Days of ‘76 Museum
Deadwood, South Dakota
To support the exhibit design for the Clowser Collection in the museum's new facility.  The Clowser Collection is nearly 5,000 pieces of American Indian art and artifacts representing 20 different tribes and includes textiles, dance regalia, and other items.

First Peoples Fund
Rapid City, South Dakota
To support the Community Spirit Award, a series of programs honoring American Indian artists nominated by their tribes.  The multiday event features exhibits of the artists' work, performances by tribal artists, and visits to reservation schools.

Rapid City Fine Arts Council
Rapid City, South Dakota
To support the creation of the Black Hills Press Box Web site.  A group of arts organizations will benefit from the development of a special web-based marketing service.  The service, using existing media outlets, is designed to increase media coverage and will later be made more widely available to other local arts organizations. 

TENNESSEE

Frist Center for the Visual Arts
Nashville, Tennessee
To support the juried exhibit Artists with Disabilities.  The Frist Center will partner with VSA arts of Tennessee and Full Circle Art to provide a series of professional development workshops to help artists develop their portfolios and write artist statements.

TEXAS

Art Museum of Southeast Texas
Beaumont, Texas
To support Bryan Collier: Defining Moments, an exhibition and related programming.  Mr. Collier's watercolor and collage designs are inspired by stories of individuals who have impacted contemporary American cultural identity.  The museum will work with the Beaumont Independent School District to conduct enrichment programs associated with the exhibit.

Binational Independent Film Festival
El Paso, Texas
To support components of a film festival including workshops and pre-event talks by independent film directors.  Scheduled participants include filmmakers Andy Lauer, Steve Buscemi, and Mark Medoff.  The festival, a juried competition of independent films, involves organizations in El Paso and Juarez, Mexico.

To support Elements of Mexican Design and Architecture, a civic design forum.  The forum will serve as a foundation leading to the design of Plaza Mayachen, a proposed Mexican heritage cultural tourism center in El Paso, a hub of the U.S./Mexico border region.

To support the Cine Las Américas International Film Festival.  The 11th annual festival will include documentary and narrative features, short films, and youth cinema made by or about Latin American and indigenous peoples of the Americas.  Approximately 30 local, national, and international filmmakers will participate.

Express Theatre
Houston, Texas
To support the production of Beauty and the Beast, a musical adaptation in English and Spanish.  This adaptation by Alex A.C. Garnder, featuring choreographer Cherita Judson, will be presented during the summer of the theater's 17th anniversary season.

VSA arts of Texas

To support Actual Lives, a community-based theater project in which adults with disabilities will create and perform original works.  Guest artists include choreographer Allison Orr, director Robert Tolaro, and writing coach Chris Strickling.

Moab Music Festival, Inc.
Moab, Utah
To support the production of the operas Lucrezia by William Bolcolm and Bastianello by John Musto.  Bolcolm and Musto will also perform in American Project, the festival's free public performance.

Fairfax Symphony Orchestra
McLean, Virginia
To support the presentation of Ellis Island: The Dream of America by Peter Boyer.  The composition is a blend of oral history and symphonic music that celebrates the American immigrant experience.

Visual Arts Center of Richmond
Richmond, Virginia
To support When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Wounded Women Veterans.  Writer Laura Browder and photographer Sascha Pflaeging will collect photographic portraits and oral histories of women soldiers wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

WASHINGTON

Broadway Center for the Performing Arts
Tacoma, Washington
To support performances and outreach activities by Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars and their fusion of traditional West African music, roots reggae, and rhythmic traditional folk.  They will participate in lecture demonstrations for general audiences, including residents of Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood.

Methow Arts Alliance
Twisp, Washington
To support marketing efforts promoting the region's cultural offerings.   Project plans include enhancing the alliance's website and expanding distribution of the Methow Valley Arts Magazine.

Penn Cove Water Festival Association
Coupeville, Washington
To support a festival featuring American Indian arts.  Folk and traditional arts, including the showcase of traditional canoes, are the focus of the event. 

Pomegranate Center
Issaquah, Washington
To support the creation of decorative tiles at Pear Tree Place, a residential rehabilitation facility.  Artist Milenko Matanovic will lead elementary students and their families in designing, fabricating, and installing the tiles. 

Swinomish Indian Tribal Community
La Conner, Washington
To support the Superfly Filmmaking Experience.  Professional filmmakers from the region will work with youth to create film shorts to be showcased at the Seattle International Film Festival. 

WEST VIRGNIA

Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia
Charleston, West Virginia
To support the creation and exhibition of an installation by artists Chris Dutch and Robin Hammer.  As a collective impression of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, the installation will allow viewers to move within freestanding parts of the installation which will be presented in the Juliet Art Gallery.

WISCONSIN

Phipps Center for the Arts
Hudson, Wisconsin
To support The Bench Project.  Professional artists, alternative education students, teachers, and community members will create a public art installation to celebrate the distinct characteristics of Somerset, Wisconsin. 

University of Wisconsin at Parkside
Kenosha, Wisconsin
To support mezzo-soprano Ruby Hinds' multi-media presentation of The Marian Anderson Story.  Hinds will also speak as the guest of both the university's Women and Gender Lecture Series and the Racine High School Choral Festival.

Wausau Dance Theatre
Wausau, Wisconsin
To support a ballet performances of Alice in Wonderland, and associated educational activities. The production, choreographed by Derryl Yeager and Irina Kolpakova, will also tour to Prairie du Sac, Hartford, Oshkosh, and Milwaukee. 

Wisconsin Children's Center
Madison, Wisconsin
To support the commission of the kinetic sculpture Take Two: Me & You.  Artists Tom Loeser and Bird Ross will engage participants of YWCA/Third Street Women's Program in the sculpture's design and fabrication.  The artwork will be located in the museum's free, indoor plaza.

WYOMING

Young Musicians, Inc.
Evanston, Wyoming
To support the Music, Arts, and Technology Camp.  Based on skills learned with guest artists, adults and students will present a series of concerts for the public.
