2.2 Students demonstrate map skills by describing the absolute and relative locations of people, places, and environments.
 
1. Locate on a simple letter-number grid system the specific locations and geographic features in their neighborhood or community.

This 32-page booklet, published in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and the National Geographic Society, is designed to help adults stir children's curiosity about geography. Includes many suggestions for simple activities. K-4.
 
Map Adventures (Teacher Packet)

An on-line teacher packet for grades K-3. Students learn basic concepts for visualizing objects from different perspectives and how to understand and use maps. Includes teacher information, seven lesson plans, two activity sheets, and a poster that can be printed in color or black & white by printing pdf files on fifteen 8.5" x 11" sheets.
 
2. Label from memory a simple map of the North American continent, including the countries, oceans, Great Lakes, major rivers, and mountain ranges. Identify the essential map elements: title, legend, directional indictor, scale, and date.

Describes the historical and on-going changes in land use and land cover for several regions around the U.S. The section on Land Use Changes in the Southwestern U.S. includes southern California . A section for teachers is under construction.
