About Energy Performance Rating

Energy performance rating is a comparison of a facility's energy performance to that of similar facilities around the United States. The energy performance rating shows your facility's energy performance on a scale of 1 to 100. A rating of 50 means that half of similar facilities in the United States are less energy efficient than your facility, and half are more efficient.

The number of space types that can receive the energy performance rating in Portfolio Manager is growing and now includes office buildings, bank/financial institutions, courthouses, retail stores, K-12 schools, hotels/motels, acute care and children's hospitals, supermarkets, residence halls/dormitories, warehouses, medical offices, and wastewater treatment plants.

Note:  Ineligible buildings, i.e., buildings that are more than 50% comprised of space types that are not eligible to receive a rating, can be managed in Portfolio Manager.  If energy data is provided, you will be able to compare your buildings’ performance (e.g., Average Site and Source EUI) against similar buildings nationwide.

In order to Apply for the ENERGY STAR, a facility must have a minimum rating of 75, indicating it is amongst the top 25 percent in the market.

Note: a wastewater treatment plant is not eligible to apply for the ENERGY STAR.

A rating is generated for a facility when all required information has been entered into Portfolio Manager.  If the facility's physical or operational characteristic is not known, a default value may be used and the resulting rating will be reported with a notation that an estimate has been made.

For more information about entering facility data into Portfolio Manager, see Create a Facility and/or Managing Facility Data.  If a rating is not being generated for a facility after data has been entered, see Reasons for Not Receiving an Energy Performance Rating.
