Shi-You Ding - Senior Scientist
Dr. Ding has 7 years of experience working on biochemistry and molecular biology of cellulase systems, especially the multi-protein complex, cellulosome. His recent research has focused on bionanotechnology using site-directed mutagenesis and other molecular biological approaches to create protein building blocks for the potential application of molecular manipulation at the nanometer scale. The project has been funded by the DOE Office of Science under the National Nanotechnology Initiative to understand nanoscale chemistry—quantum dot interactions with proteins and carbon nanotubes and the mediation of inter-quantum dot communication. Dr. Ding also provides his expertise on bioinformatics and molecular biology to collaborate with other NREL scientists in studying the structure and function of biomass degradation enzymes, new enzyme screening, and methodology to improve the enzymes. More recently, he has been involved in establishing the NREL Biomass Surface Characterization Laboratory, which will use cutting-edge technologies such as atomic force microscopy, near-field scanning optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and environmental scanning electron microscopy to study the process of biomass conversion. He received a Ph.D. in Molecular Evolution from The Chinese Academy of Sciences (1994).
