Relationships with States

EPA and states develop compliance and enforcement short-term work plans and assign resources to projects. In these plans, EPA sets national program priorities and activities for the Agency's environmental enforcement and compliance program.

EPA and states share responsibility for environmental protection and work as partners to solve the nation's environmental challenges. One approach to this partnership is the National Environmental Performance Partnership System ("performance partnerships"). The goal of this partnership is to build an environmental management system that is focused on achieving the best results possible, taking full advantage of the unique strengths of each partner
