1996 - 1997 Summary of Hazardous Materials Transportation Incidents
(from Chapter 10 of PHMSA's 1996-1997 Biennial Report to Congress)
PHMSA's Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHM) maintains the Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS).
This system is the principal source of safety data related to hazardous materials transportation.
It contains comprehensive information on hazardous materials incidents, exemptions and approvals,
enforcement actions, and other elements that support the regulatory program.
Once a year PHMSA prepares an analysis of the current hazardous materials incidents data.
This analysis is a snapshot of the data at that time and does not reflect the additional
incident reports PHMSA receives after that time. To see the most up-to-date Incident
information, go the the "Hazardous Materials Incident Summary Statistics and Data".
The following table contains the summary and each of the Hazmat charts, graphs,
and tables from the 1996-1997 Summary of Hazardous Materials Transportation
Incidents. The summary and exhibits are available for download.
