Superfund Information Systems

CERCLIS Database
The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) database contains general information on sites across the nation and US territories including location, status, contaminants, and actions taken. Find information on sites being assessed under the Superfund Program, hazardous waste sites and potential hazardous waste sites, from CERCLIS.

Archived Sites
If you are having trouble finding the site you are looking for, it may be on the list of Archived Sites. The Archive designation means that assessment at a site has been completed and EPA has determined no steps will be taken to designate the site as a priority by listing it on the National Priorities List (NPL). No further remedial action is planned for these sites under the Superfund Program.

Record of Decision System (RODS)
For more detailed information on hazardous waste sites being cleaned up under the Superfund Program, search the Record of Decision System (RODS). These decision documents describe the chosen remedy for site remediation. They also include detailed site description, history, and contaminants. The RODS database includes Amendments and Explanations of Significant Differences which describe both minor and significant changes from the original remedy stated in the ROD, such as a contingent remedy or new technology. RODS can be searched for a specific document or across the entire database by keyword.

Five-Year Reviews Online
After RODs have been completed and the remedy has been implemented at a site, an assessment of the remedial activity is usually conducted within five years if hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants remain on site above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure. These assessments evaluate the implementation and performance of the selected remedy and determine whether the remedy at a site remains protective of human health and the environment. Five-Year Reviews Online can be searched for a specific document or across the entire database by keyword.

Site Assessment Documentation PilotNew
After the discovery of a potentially hazardous waste site, EPA assesses the site to determine the severity of the hazard. Site Assessment Documentation Online is a pilot system where you can search for preliminary assessment and site inspection reports for a small sample of sites. The reports contain site descriptions, operational history, contaminant concentrations, sampling results, laboratory analyses, and pathways.

Site Spill IDs
The Site Spill Identifier List (SPIL) system provides a quick and easy way to obtain the Site Spill Identification (SSID) of Superfund sites needed for timekeeping, invoicing, cost recovery charges, and site-specific travel purposes.

Data Element Dictionary (DED)New
If you are unfamiliar with a term found within the Superfund Information System area of the EPA’s website then visit the Data Element Dictionary (DED)! In the DED you can search and view definitions and descriptions of the elements, tables, and codes found in CERCLIS.

Site Information Products
A variety of Superfund Information reports and products can also be downloaded or ordered online. The Superfund Order and Information Line provides descriptions of the available products, links for download, and order forms.
