Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Positions

The CIS Clerk reviews various types of applications and petitions for benefits under the Immigration and Nationality Act and prepares replies to applicants requesting additional information; explains basic eligibility requirements and provisions of law to applicants and interested parties; conducts sensitive file reviews with numerous Federal, state and local agencies; prepares case file records and related documents to be routed to other offices; searches for missing files/records; places loose documents into appropriate case files; and performs general mail handling and distribution including sorting, opening, date stamping, classifying, processing, and routing.
The CIS Clerk must have one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level.
Completion of a bachelor's degree or a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required experience.
Candidates selected for the CIS Clerk position who have not already graduated from the Immigration Information Officer Basic Training Course (IIOBTC) in Glynco, GA will be required to attend this 5-½ week course and to achieve a cumulative passing grade on the examinations. Travel expenses for training will be at agency expense.
