Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Deportation Officers provide for the control and removal of criminal and non-criminal aliens who have been ordered for deportation or otherwise required to depart from the United States at various stages of their deportation/exclusion hearings. Officers must closely monitor deportation proceedings from initiation to conclusion. Close liaison with foreign consulates and embassies is necessary to facilitate the timely issuance of passports and travel documents required for deportation. Deportation Officers also work closely with other Immigration and Customs Enforcement law officers and attorneys, as well as with the U.S. Attorneys Office in identifying, locating, and/or apprehending aliens; preparing, presenting, and defending deportation or exclusion proceedings in moving such proceedings through the various immigration and other Federal courts; and ensuring the physical removal of aliens from the U.S once their deportation/exclusion orders are issued. Officers may also be required to respond to congressional inquiries.

Requirements:

Deportation Officers must be hired before their thirty-seventh birthday unless they have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement position.

Conditions:

This position periodically requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including running, climbing, negotiating obstacles, and physically subduing and lifting uncooperative individuals as required. The work involves the risk of attack without warning and requires quick decisions to protect lives, resorting to the use of deadly force only as a last resort. Assignments may require regular visits to prisons or other correctional facilities, manufacturing, storage, or other industrial areas.
