Twin Fire Update – July 25, 2000  8:00 PM

The Twin Fire, located near the Lost Trail Pass on the Montana-Idaho border was today estimated to have burned 279 acres.  The fire has not affected highway 93, but motorists should be aware of the possibility of smoke along the roadway.  Currently, officials say the Lost Trail Ski Resort is not in danger.

Firefighters have thus far been successful in establishing a fireline on the west flank of the fire.  Between Monday and Tuesday afternoon, 15-20 loads of retardant were dropped onto the hottest portions of the fire effectively restraining the fire along the ridge tops.  A Type I Incident Management Team from Alaska assumed management of the fire on Monday.

Further updates will be released as information becomes available.  Fire maps are available at the Salmon-Challis National Forest office on Highway 93 south of Salmon.  For additional fire information please call:  208-756-5283.  Information on these fires has been posted on the Salmon-Challis National Forest web page at  www.fs.fed.us/r4/sc/fire2000.
