On Monday, the Clear Creek Fire moved toward Blackbird Mountain on the south side and farther into Arnett Creek on the east side. The fire line at Napias-Moccasin Creek is holding. On the south side, numerous spot fires occurred up to ¼-mile ahead of the main fire. Total fire area is now estimated at 106,870 acres.
Lightning from August 4 resulted in two spot fires that were detected today, on the south side of the fire. Initial attack was carried out on a ¼-acre fire and helicopters and a plane dropped retardant on a second fire, approximately 40 acres in size. Fire retardant was used to pre-treat the fuels on the outside of the line to help reduce spotting. The fire line from Blackbird Canyon north to Quartz Gulch held and was improved. Fire crossed a portion of the fire line between Blackbird Mine and Blackbird Mountain. The fires are expected to be active causing high plumes of smoke in the Clear Creek and Big Deer Creek areas due to continued hot, dry weather.
The Third Battalion, Fifth Marine Corps Regiment, from Camp Pendleton, CA, completed their field training today. The 26 Marine crews will be building fire line tomorrow. (A crew consists of 20 people.)
Clear Creek Fire remains about 12 miles west of the town of Salmon. The town is in no danger and no evacuation is being considered.
Highway 93 was closed all day over Lost Trail Pass due to debris on the road left by the Maynard Fire which crossed the road yesterday. Travelers are advised to call toll free 800-226-ROAD (7623) for current status. There is no estimate of when regular highway traffic will be allowed to resume.
Further updates will be
