Statistics on U.S. R&D expenditures are categorized by provider of funds (Federal government, nonfederal government, industry, academia, and nonprofit institutions), type of performer (Federal government, industry, academia, nonprofit institutions, and federally-funded research and development centers), and character of work (basic research, applied research, and development).
