Energy Efficiency Server Benchmark Technical Workshop March 27, 2006, Santa Clara, CA

Following the January 31, 2006 server and data center conference, AMD and Sun Microsystems convened a technical workshop to discuss the creation of a server efficiency benchmark. This workshop was held in the hopes of achieving the following results over the next few months:

  • Create a draft protocol for measuring server power in conjunction with the most widely used server performance benchmarks (SPEC, TPC, others)
  • Circulate the draft protocol to the broader community of stakeholders for comments
  • Incorporate the comments by a review committee to create a revised version of the protocol that reflects broad industry input.

More than 50 high level technical attendees all of whom are involved in server design, server performance analysis, server purchasing, or general energy analysis of data centers attended the meeting. Invitees included industry leaders such as Hewlett Packard, IBM, Dell, Apple, AT&T, AMD, Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, APC, Goldman Sachs, Google, Microsoft, ANCIS Inc., EYP Mission Critical Facilities, PG&E, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
