Central Air Conditioner and Air-Source Heat Pump Specification

EPA has finalized the ENERGY STAR Version 4.0 specification for air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and central air conditioners (CACs). As such, the comment period is now closed. The new Version 4.0 specification will go into effect on April 1, 2006. Partners and other interested parties with questions about the new specification and transition to this specification can contact Rachel Schmeltz, EPA, at Schmeltz.Rachel@epa.gov.

Final Specification

On a related note, the EER requirement in the ENERGY STAR specification was reinstated effective August 5, 2004. The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), with funding from the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) and its members, is hosting a national database that allows consumers to identify products that meet the current ENERGY STAR specification as well as other levels of efficiency. To help understand how to use this online database, we have created a quick guide PDF (118KB) to help you with the various fields used in this online database.
