OIA PRESS RELEASEENEWETAK RECEIVES U.S. GRANT ASSISTANCE TO SUPPORT FOOD AND AGRICULTURE MAINTENANCE
Majuro (October 23, 2008) - Today, U.S. Ambassador Clyde Bishop presented a grant award in the amount of $1,432,990 to Enewetak Mayor Jackson Ading. This $1,432,990 in grant assistance to the Enewetak Local Government for the Enewetak Food & Agriculture Program is provided through the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Insular Affairs, under the Compact, as amended. These grant funds will be used to operate a food and agriculture program for the people of Enewetak Atoll including funds for the operation of the Enewetak vessel “Lady E”. The performance goal of this grant is to provide food to the population of Enewetak Atoll and to rehabilitate the soil of the atoll to support agriculture. In addition to this $1,432,990 grant from DOI, the Enewetak Local Government also recently received $714,156 from the U.S. Government through DOI for the purchase of the vessel “Lady E” to help support the Food & Agriculture Program and another $601,156 from the U.s. Government through DOI to establish a Five-Year Maintenance Plan for the “Lady E”. Ambassador Bishop congratulated Mayor Ading, his staff, and the people of Enewetak for the excellent job they have been doing over the past several years in developing and maintaining a planting and agriculture maintenance program that provides supplemental food crops for the people living on Enewetak Atoll. He said that the U.S. Government is pleased to be able to provide this annual Food & Agriculture Program financial assistance to help promote better nutrition and self sufficiency for the Enewetak people. .
