Hawaii Opera Theatre's (HOT) carefully prepared program proved to be perfectly suited to a new opera audience, and the selected works were introduced with appropriate context. The performers were first rate, comfortable with their roles, and clearly quite capable of appearing as star performers for main stage productions. Although one of the singers previously scheduled to appear became ill prior to the performance, the remaining cast adapted to the situation with polish and delivered an impressive program. An unexpected highlight was the participation of two members of the military (one of whom was from the Pearl Harbor base).
The venue consisted of a small ballroom with limited accommodations for the performance, however Hawaii Opera Theater adapted with body microphones, tall tropical plants, and their large HOT lighted marquis. The audience was energetic and thoroughly impressed by the quality of performance they were given by the talented singers. Of particular mention – the accompanist who made the Steinway Concert Grand sound like a full orchestra, conveying the nuances typically missing in this kind of setting. The quality of the event was spectacular and the setting adapted to an exciting performance space.
