Kentucky Opera's performance at Fort Knox was a humorous and light-hearted look at the particulars of opera and musical theater. The show started off with a bang -- a medley from Phantom of the Opera resulted in a standing ovation within 15 minutes of the beginning of the show. Elements of humor interspersed throughout resulted in laughs, and the well-rounded repertoire was enthusiastically received.
This scripted show was created specifically for the military base tour, taking into consideration the NEA's request to plan a show well suited to an entirely new audience. There were a number of military references, and some works were chosen for their military themes. Because of the success of this show (as well as another at Fort Campbell), Kentucky Opera is considering reworking it next year to use as part of their standard educational outreach to high schools.
The Kentucky Opera also conducted three educational programs on the day of the event: a demonstration for elementary students, a choir workshop with middle school students, and a performance of the Gounod opera Romeo and Juliet for high school students. More than 1,000 students participated in the educational activities.
