Anchorage Opera impressed us with their unique plans for a performance at Elmendorf AFB. Songs were selected to echo the themes of courage and commitment seen in the military mottos of the Armed Forces, such as Air Force 31st Fighter Wing's motto "Return with Honor" and the Army 101st Airborne Division's motto, "Rendezvous with Destiny." Singers performed works from opera masterpieces such as Bizet's Carmen as well as musical theater favorites such as Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! The program concluded with renditions of several patriotic classics.

The evening was led by a narrator who introduced the concept at the beginning of the performance and then light-heartedly interacted with the audience between songs to explain the plots of the various operas and musical theater works. Because of the dinner-theater-style arrangement of the room, singers were also able to move about and interact with the audience throughout the evening. Songs from Oklahoma! and Daughters of the Regiment were highlights, and elicited much applause from the audience.
