Transportation Security Administration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  - March 14, 2005

TSA Press Office: (571) 227-2829

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced it has signed two separate contracts to provide maintenance for TSA’s Explosives Detection Systems (EDS) machines currently deployed in the nation’s largest airports.  General Electric (GE) InVision, Inc. of Newark, Calif., will provide maintenance for the approximately 800 GE EDS machines while L-3 Communications of New York, N.Y., will provide maintenance for approximately 500 L-3 EDS machines.

“TSA continues to invest in our valuable EDS machines,” said Rear Adm. David M. Stone, USN (Ret.), Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for TSA.  “Keeping these machines operating at their optimal level is critical to ensuring the security of commercial aviation, and we look forward to working with GE and L-3 on this mission.”

The GE Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract will run through September 30, 2005 and is valued at $36 million.  L-3’s ID/IQ contract is valued at $28 million for the same time period.  Both contracts have four one-year options.  Each company will be responsible for all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for their EDS manufactured equipment already in airports and for additional EDS machines that will be purchased during the period of the contract.  Maintenance services ordered under this contract are fixed-price.
