Statement by CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton on the Passing of Former CPSC Chairman Susan King

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Hal Stratton issued this statement after the death on Thursday of former CPSC Chairman Susan B. King: "Susan King was a dynamic Chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. She led CPSC in setting safety standards, announcing recalls, and undertaking many new projects. Her activism exemplified the 1970s, when she was Chairman, and continues to inspire much of CPSC's work."

Susan B. King was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to be Chairman of CPSC in 1977. An attorney and former staffer at the Federal Election Commission, Ms. King served as CPSC Chairman until 1980. In the 1980s, Susan King headed the Steuben Glass division of Corning Inc. Subsequently, she served on the board of directors of Coca-Cola Co. and as a trustee of Duke University.

Over the 31-year history of CPSC, there have been eight Chairmen. Susan B. King was the third Chairman and the first woman to hold the position.
