WASHINGTON, August 10, 2005 - The U. S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service
(FSIS) announced today it will sponsor an outreach event with local tribal leaders and Oklahoma schools on August 24, 2005,
at the Oaks Mission School in Oaks, Oklahoma.
The day will bring together Keetoowah and Cherokee tribal leaders, students from Oaks Mission and neighboring schools.
Representatives from Comanche Nation College, Oklahoma's first and only tribally-controlled college, and historically
black Langston College, have been invited to also participate in the day's festivities.
Starting at 9 a.m., the FSIS Food Safety Mobile will open with fun food safety activities for the students.
BAC!® and Thermy, safe food handling campaign and preparation characters, will also be on hand to entertain and
educate about food safety. Besides meeting BAC!® and Thermy, the students may interact with mobile staff who will
provide other fun activities like playing the food safety wheel game and distributing coloring books, puzzles and word
searches. Students will also have the opportunity to view food safety videos. Evening activities will begin at 5 p.m. for
adults who are interested FSIS career networking opportunities and recruitment. There is no need to pre-register.
This is the latest of many outreach efforts to underrepresented populations within the United States. The event promises to
not only be informative, but fun and educational for the whole family. |
