Why did my air carrier tell me to contact TSA?

Some air carriers will tell you that TSA is solely responsible for missing items, damaged bags, and sometimes even lost bags. This is due to the fact that TSA is the only entity that is .required. to go into your baggage. Although most bags are screened and cleared without opening, using high-tech methods, some must be opened by TSA in order to complete a thorough screening. On the other hand, carrier employees, contractors, and other third parties have control of, and access to your bag throughout its entire journey. This access is not under the control of TSA.

TSA recommends that you protect yourself by not packing jewelry, cash, electronics, or fragile items in your checked baggage. For more information, please see TSA Packing Tips.

We also recommend that you use a TSA accepted and recognized lock. These are locks that can be opened by TSA screeners, then re-locked for the remainder of the trip.
