Washington State Wine Bottle Reuse - JTR 1995

The Clean Washington Center (CWC), working closely with the Skookum Corporation, a non-profit organization in Port Townsend, WA, completed the development steps necessary for establishing a state-wide wine bottle resterilization operation. Skookum, operating a small scale machine and filling limited orders under the “Skookum ReWine” label, used the technical support of CWC to document all aspects of the pilot business. This laid the groundwork for the technical and business issues that a state-wide program would face. EPA funding did not contribute to the pilot machine or operation. Skookum also developed a “Green Winery Program” which fostered critical relationships with wineries and the State Liquor Control Board and aligned itself with Northwest Materials Reuse, a separate effort that was beginning to examine the same feasibility of a large operation in Seattle.

Skookum ReWine, due to their remote location, limited capacity, and lack of additional commercial support, ceased operations in August of 1996. Efforts continued to work with Northwest Materials Reuse to secure adequate capital and launch the full scale operation, but by early 1997, these efforts also unfortunately came to a close.

Nevertheless, the JTR project was successful in exploring the feasibility and producing model business documentation for a large operation, the project's original goal. These documents should prove invaluable to any individual or community exploring bottle resterilization opportunities.
