Transportation Security Officer John Murphy Jr. of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport recently received recognition for reacting quickly and providing medical care to a passenger who had collapsed after suffering an apparent seizure.
As Murphy left the checkpoint on June 22 to begin his break, he noticed a small crowd of people gathered around a person lying on the floor. As a certified emergency medical technician, Murphy instinctively responded and assessed the situation – the passenger was experiencing a severe seizure. He provided aid by cushioning the man’s head and neck and keeping the airway open until a medical response team arrived.
Murphy works with Reagan National’s Safety Action Team, which is responsible for maintaining occupational safety, health, and environment standards at the airport while keeping the checkpoint and airport environment safe for travelers.
