Since its establishment in 1976, NREL has successfully pursued new technologies to develop biomass as a viable and economical source of raw materials for chemicals & materials production. As a result, NREL has developed a significant capability in the DOE national laboratory system for directly addressing these challenges. NREL has carried out a continuing program of research directed at new chemical, thermal, and biological technologies for chemicals production from a wide range of biomass sources including sugars, synthesis gas, pyrolysis oils, oilseeds, waste greases and oils, wood, and herbaceous crops. Research emphasizes discovering, improving, and developing conversion technologies; employing novel separation technologies for products and biomass feedstocks; quantifying the quality and performance of biobased products; working closely with industry to encourage the development of potential commercial products; and improving renewable diesel technologies. Close interaction with other DOE and federal laboratories, other EERE offices, and industry is an essential component and factor for this work.
