Sample Design for the 2001 Assessment

National Main Assessment Sample Design

For 2001, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) sampling followed a multistage approach:

  • sampling of geographic-based primary sampling units (PSUs),

  • sampling of schools within PSUs, and

  • sampling of students within schools.

Because NAEP state assessments are administered in even-numbered years, no state assessment was given in 2001.
