Accommodations for Students With Special Needs

Teacher, School, and SD/LEP Questionnaires

Each student is given a booklet containing separately timed blocks of items. The blocks include a set of general background questions, one or more blocks of cognitive items, subject area background questions, and background questions about their motivation and familiarity with the assessment tasks.

As a way of accommodating students with special needs, the National Assessment of Education (NAEP) offers provisions such as large-print booklets, bilingual glossaries, or magnifying equipment where available. Bilingual glossaries are not used for the reading assessment.

Teachers and school administrators are asked to complete questionnaires to provide information on

  • teacher education and experience;
  • instructional practices;
  • school policies and characteristics; and
  • students with disabilities (SD) and/or students who are limited English proficient (LEP).
