Minimum School and Student Sample Sizes for Reporting Group Results

Identifying Estimates of Standard Errors with Large Mean Square Errors

To help in the interpretation of results, NAEP uses NCES guidelines when reporting results. NAEP does not recommend the reporting of scale score results for groups of students represented by less than 62 students in NAEP samples. NAEP also identifies results when the mean square error is large. Results that are flagged for this reason should be interpreted with caution. NAEP reports do not discuss differences in which the statistical significance of the findings would be based on flagged results.
